BY JOVE, I'VE FIGURED IT OUT! // HABTOONS AND YOU by Hab Oh

Waddup Habgoblins! July is HERE and there’s much to do! I’m curious, how many of you read this through email-only vs on the site? There’s a comment section below, let me know!

THE UNIT 333 SEQUEL REBOOT

My goal this year is to reboot the entire Habtoons Comic “Universe” or Hab-O-Verse, if you will. I’ve been creating and publishing comics online for 14 years. A lot of my OG fanbase will remember those deviantArt, DrunkDuck, and ComicFury days. If you know, you know!

However, so much has changed since the inception of my online presence. I’ve aged, my political ideologies have shifted, I’ve learned more about the world and its diverse cultures and as Nina Simone said: “An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times”. I stand by that whole heartedly.

Initially, I wanted EPIC Ethel to be at the forefront as that series is incredibly important to the cultural zeitgeist behind the dreaded gentrification “movement”. There’s so much I want to tell through the wild and wacky lens. I wanted to have everything start with her, with cameos from my other series sprinkled throughout. Think of it how the MCU treated the first Iron Man movie, the catalyst that set everything in motion. An apologetic, Black-woman led comic touching on all manner of social issues is important but then it hit me: EMOTION.

I’ve been reading this book by Pat Flynn called Superfans and just within the first few pages, he discusses the emotional hook that brands utilize to grow their consumer base and reach. By default, I believe art created from circumstance will always have a hook, people tell me all the time how they connect to my characters and illustrations; especially as my style gives off incredibly nostalgic feelings of 90s animation.

For those who were around during the 2018 Era, you know about Unit 333. It was an exhibition and graphic novel I put together based on my journey with my mental health. The reception to both was phenomenal, both online and in-person. Why? Because my story deeply resonated with so many people, specifically Black people. As mental health was never (and still isn’t) discussed openly in our community, it was always brushed off as “oh he’s touched” or “that’s the devil”. I remember growing up, if you had any sort of serious behavioral issues, they’d just throw you in the basement (yes, the basement) in the Special Education classes. We NEVER saw those kids until lunch time and even then, they were separated from us. It was almost as if these fellow human beings were rejects not meant for the public. Absolutely awful!

Things have improved over the years, one of the schools I’ve taught in recent years have integrated a lot of the special needs students with the general student body. As the autism spectrum is vast and we’re still learning so much about it today.

Unit 333 was a hit because people were able to relate by either experiencing their own trauma firsthand or through someone they knew, like their child, partner, or best friend. It activated conversation. It activated compassion.

When I created the original Unit 333 graphic novel, now dubbed Unit 333: Introspect, I was fresh out of the hospital and still under the sting of what I was going through. With that, the comic was created under a bit of duress in a sense. Looking back at it, while the narrative was good, it didn’t fully explore the importance of Black Mental Health. It was rushed, crude, messy. While I don’t hate this iteration, I want to improve on it.

For the longest time, if you’ve been around, I’ve talked about revising the story BUT it’s been the backburner. As of today, as of this blog: no more. Unit 333: Reveries is currently in full development. This will begin the true revival of Habtoons. Reveries will be a longer series, delving deeper into subjects that Introspect couldn’t. Learning more about “The Ward” and the denizens within, how our main character ended up there, and dropping knowledge on the vast spectrum of what mental health and autism truly is. I will also incorporate easter eggs and characters from the past for longtime fans of Habtoons but there will be something for everyone in Reveries. You’ll be able to follow the full development journey via my Patreon page for all the behind-the-scenes content and more.

WHAT ABOUT EPIC ETHEL?

You’re probably going: “Damn, so Ethel just gonna be tossed?” Nah, never that. Our favorite fiery Bedstuy resident won’t be left on the cutting room floor, I assure. A version of her will make appearances in Unit 333: Reveries, I do have plans to make short comic strips featuring political satire and random musings. I can’t NOT include Ethel. She’s way too important. I ain’t do all those new character designs for nothing, haha!

BLACK SUMMER MARKET 7/17/2023

This Saturday, July 15th, I’m teaming up with Adorned By Taji once again for another Black Summer Market Event at Nicholas Brooklyn! This being my second time doing an event like this, I think I’ve got it figured out. There will be original works on sale and for the super curious, I’ll have a live drawing station where I will create a character for you on-the-spot. Let me emphasize that this isn’t a caricature station, this is a character design station. I implore y’all to look up the diverse types of artists and artistic styles, don’t come to my table asking for a Basquiat, haha. ANYWAY, come through and purchase some art, we’ll be there from 1-7pm!

DA ART BLOC SEASON 2 IS COMING! GUEST LIST UPDATED!

If you’re new here or have been living under Patrick Star’s rock, I have an amazing podcast series called DA ART BLOC where I get to opportunity to sit down with some of the coolest leading artists and content creators, while we actually create artwork together! Season 1 was mad fun and the live experience certainly added to that. Season 2, however, will be a pre-recorded series as coordinating for a live show can be tedious and it’s easier to edit certain things out if we say something too wild, haha!

Season 2 drops Fall 2023!

THE FIRST HABTOONS PATREON WORKSHOP

It’s finally time! I’ve been wanting to connect more with my Patrons and I’ve decided I will host monthly art workshops on my Discord Server. The first Workshop is taking place on July 26th from 7-8PM EST. This is patrons at the Great Goblin Membership Tier and up. All you’ll need is some paper, whatever you’re comfortable drawing with (pen, pencil, etc), and a good spirit then you’re all set!

Whether you’re a long-time Patron, newcomer, or considering, I’d implore you to explore the new offerings for each Membership Tier. There’s much that’s changed recently and I’m sure you’ll love it all! There’s a new Erotic Art and Creator Tier, with new art/content coming for both near the end of the month!

EMERGENCY COMMISSIONS OPEN

Lastly, Emergency Commissions are still open.

To clarify what this means, commissions are a regular service that many artists offer both online and in-person. An artist will draw for an individual, company, or institution in exchange for payment. You know, because artists deserve payment and all (I stand with the WGA). From industry giants like Kara Walker to smaller independent artists like Jeron Braxton. Commissions are one of many ways artists generate income.

An Emergency Commission is essentially just that. Commissions needed within a certain amount of time. Typically, emergency commissions don’t require a written agreement and what is on offer is usually a fixed service at a fixed amount.

I wanted to give clarity as there are a handful of newcomers to Habtoons and this mailing list that are new to the greater art world. So, I hope this helps in your understanding. And, I appreciate everyone who’s shared the Ko-Fi Commission link so far! It’s been very helpful!

Once I officially get over this hurdle and out of this rut, I assure you I will create an entire (YouTube) series on this so that no other artist has to go through this. Even though the entirety of human civilization wouldn’t be here without artists and artistic ingenuity, we still seem to be at the bottom of the social totem pole. Look at all the layoffs in media (Cartoon Network, HBO, Netflix, etc), look at the current Writer’s Guild of America Strike, look at the rampant theft of artists work without proper compensation. It’s ridiculous. But 2023 feels like a year of change, so I hopeful the art community as a whole will rise up and be rightfully compensated.

Anyway, thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing y’all around soon.

Stay gold

AN INTERNET BEEF SANDWICH // THE NEXT STEPS FOR HABTOONS by Hab Oh

Waddup Habgoblins, July is right around the corner, and I figured it was about time we had an update. I hope you all are having a extremely joyous summer so far! A lot has happened, so let’s get to it! Oh, and by the way, you should absolutely read these on my website for the full experience!!

THE FINAL FANTASY FANDOM VS HAB OH

Yes, you read that title right. Internet Beef Sandwich. If you’re reading this on my website, you most likely see that video about my critique regarding Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 16. I found out that the game has zero amounts of Black characters, let alone any People of Color. So, I got on stream and had a critical thing to say about it and it didn’t go well with a small portion of that game’s fandom. Who woulda thought? Ha!

Anyway, even as I type these, there’s a ton of boneheads on my TikTok not only replying with poor arguments but also being outright racist and disrespectful towards me. Unsurprisingly, most of these people have cartoons for pictures, go figure.

This guy spent two hours calling me names and expected me to have a real conversation with him.

Since then, I’ve seen more engagement on my YouTube, TikTok, and Twitter than I have in….ever. Would be wild that my opinion on a video game would garner more interest than all the actual work that I do. Haha. I’ll ride this wave and see where it takes me, maybe I’ll draw the characters as Black people and see how that goes.

THE BLACK SUMMER MARKET

Don’t worry, the rest of this newsletter is relatively drama free! Especially when it comes to a recent event that I participated in called the BLACK SUMMER MARKET, presented by Adorned in Taji. I had the opportunity to display my work at the amazing Nicolas Brooklyn shop here in Bedstuy. It being my first ever art market as opposed to my usual exhibitions turned out to be a huge learning experience. I talk about it all in my latest vlog and you won’t believe what happened that day. It involves Popeyes, an angry chair, and a giant bowl of sweet-smelling incense.

And guess what?! I’ll be BACK at the Black Summer Market on July 15th! You can RSVP (it’s FREE) by clicking these words. That same link also takes you to vendor sign-ups, in case you wanted to sell your wares alongside me; 40 bucks for a table ain’t half bad.

NEW SERIES: HAB OH DRAWS…THE 90S

Last month I debuted a brand-new art series called HAB OH DRAWS…The 90s. The goal of this new project is to try my hand at recreating classic cartoons from our past. The first video and illustration was a success! A lot of folks engaged across all my platforms and the best part is…YOU control who I draw next. I’ve already gotten dozens of amazing suggestions, so who knows, you might see your character next!

I plan to do about 10 or so episodes of this before moving on to another decade. We’re gonna continuing winding the clock back! Stay tuned!

YOUTUBE PARNTERSHIP AND THE STREAMER WARS

As I stated, a lot has happened since my last newsletter. A new streaming platform called KICK has arrived to shake things up in the content creation space. I have no plans of going over there but they’ve offered many big-name creators (who are White) millions to switch over from their current platforms. It’s been said that this is a landmark deal in this industry, equating to NFL Level contracts. Unfortunately, the site sucks and has no moderation so many people have already faced racist, homophobic, and sexist comments from viewers. Not to mention that it’s owned by a gambling organization, yikes!

Twitch, on the other hand, has been updated a ton of their moderation systems and tools. They’ve even updated a handful of old policies to keep in line with new regulations due to what I speculate comes from their recent deals/partnerships with the WWE and other entities. One of those policies states that a Twitch Streamer, of any level, cannot multistream to other platforms; meaning if you’re live today on Twitch you can only be live on Twitch. Can’t do multiple platforms at the same time anymore. Which leads me to my next point…

YOUTUBE

The Google-owned company has also updated their policies but more in favor of the creator. Now, to reach YouTube Partnership, you just need 500 Subscribers and 3,000 Watch Hours within 365 Days vs what it used to be, which was 1000 Subs & 4,000 Watch Hours. Guess what? I already have one of those requirements down!

I’m now closer to YouTube Partner than I’ve ever been and it’s exciting! I just need to get those Watch Hours up. Which means, more quality video content for y’all. Come through and watch me, I won’t bite! Haha

Lastly, due to Twitch’s new “exclusivity” policy, I’ve switched up how my livestreams operate. I still stream on Tuesday & Thursday Mornings BUT art project-based Live Drawing streams will be on YouTube and gaming-based streams will be on Twitch. So far, it’s worked out pretty well and I appreciate everyone’s support during this, somewhat confusing, transition. Make sure you tell your friends to subscribe and watch my amazing videos too! Haha!

DA ART BLOC SEASON 2 IS IN DEVELOPMENT

We cookin’ over here and Season 2 of DA ART BLOC is going to be my best podcasting work yet. I’m so excited to officially announce the guest list for the upcoming fall season. You will NOT be disappointed! Season 2 will have pre-recorded episodes as opposed to a livestream.

A proper release date will be announced later with the possibility of MORE guests being added. If you don’t know what DA ART BLOC is, I’d advise you to check out season 1 and see for yourself, enjoy!

THE BIG PATREON REVAMP

The latter three membership tiers out of the six offered.

Back in May, I told y’all that I’d be revamping my Patreon Page. Well, it’s done. There’s a new About Section, Intro Video, and even brand-new Membership Tiers. I’m changing the way that I engage with the page and want it to serve the community in a better way. There are now six membership tiers with the final two tiers being an Erotic Art Tier and a Creator Workshop Tier.

I’ve been wanting to dip into the world of erotic art for a while, but I wasn’t sure how to go about it but after taking a long time to think about it and receiving feedback from a couple of people, I believe it’s time. With the Creator Tier, I want to offer tools, resources, and a space for creatives to network; and possibly collab. You can check out all the changes here and if you have been on the fence about signing up, this is the perfect time to hop off the fence and come over. You won’t regret it.

There’s new Patron-only content uploaded frequently with the erotic art on the way VERY soon.

A FEW MORE THINGS BEFORE YOU GO

+ I’ll be offering free creator assets soon (emotes, etc).

+ Emergency Commissions are currently open once again. I’ve got an unexpected expense that I need to settle. I’ll drop the flyer below, please share it out to your communities!

+ Revamping my Ko-Fi Page with a set monetary goal I’d like to reach. Ko-Fi will be used more as a TIP service than a monthly subscription ala Patreon.

+ New EPIC Ethel art and mini-comics are coming in July.

+ I’m going to lean more into art world and gaming news a bit, as that seems to have given new life to my platforms.

+ Don’t forget to come through to BLACK SUMMER MARKET on July 15th!

+ The Mass Effect 1 YouTube Series is on the way!

+ Diablo IV Build Videos are on the way!

+ The Nu Xanti Discord is OPEN and growing. Come join us!

As always, thanks for reading and for your continued support!

Until next time, stay gold

UP AND STUCK // NEW PROJECTS INBOUND! by Hab Oh

Waddup Habgoblins, we’re in MAY already?! Time is just flying by, and I heard there’s a science to it. Something about our perception of time as we age.

ANYWAY. Happy May! Let’s get into some news and updates.

THE ROAD TO YOUTUBE PARTNER (PART 2)

One of my “Big 3” goals for 2023 is becoming a YouTube Partner. I don’t know why but I feel it in my gut that this is something I need to be doing. Here’s a visual of what I’ve been talking about on nearly every livestream since my return. This is what is required to reach YouTube Partner, enabling me to monetize my channel among other features. We’re SO CLOSE to reaching that 1k Subscriber Goal and as of writing this, the channel is sitting at 694 Subs!

I’m confident I’ll be past 1,000 Subscribers by the fall but the real challenge is obtaining those watch hours. As you can see, these are some incredibly high numbers I need to reach for my Regular Videos OR YouTube Shorts.

This is where YOU, my wonder Habgoblin community, come in. I have an incredibly hard time asking for assistance but in order for this community and my career to blossom, I have to step outside of my comfort zone and try: I’d love to see more of you watching and commenting on my videos. I do appreciate the “lurking” but to get the results I need; the community has to be active.

The first 24 hours of a YouTube Video’s upload are the most crucial, this is when the YouTube Algorithm picks apart every aspect of your upload: watch time, comments, likes, shares, and so on. I’m incredibly grateful for the community members like Cocoqueenie and Kunom who make it their business to share and comment on just about every upload. You may not realize but every little action helps and that was proven when I uploaded that Black Comic-Con Vlog in April.

I know without a shadow of doubt, if we uplift these videos and shorts; the channel will reach Partnership before the year is up! Let’s get this done, Habgoblins!

5 Years Of Introspection

The biggest project I’ve ever put together is turning 5 this year! Unit 333: Introspect was an exhibition and graphic novel that I created to share my mental health story. It was a dark time for me and I was extremely close to leaving this world. Fortunately, I had a great support system and community around me to get me back on my feet to create, as of right now, the highlight of my artistic career.

I love that this story and the exhibition resonated with some many people. To be perfectly honest, it was the first time I truly felt seen and heard in my life.

This year, I want to honor that same community, the same feeling with a brand-new take on the original concept and narrative of Unit 333. So I’m proud to announce that I will be developing a brand-new experience titled Unit 333: Reveries. There’s a lot of planning that needs to be done but now the word is out, and I have to stick to my guns, as the old saying goes. Expect to see more details drop in June.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, for the remainder of May, the Unit 333: Introspect book will be discounted at $7. If you haven’t gotten a copy yet, now’s your chance!

NEW SERIES? OLD SERIES? EVERY SERIES!

DA ART BLOC is making its triumphant return with an all-new look. Season 2 will be pre-recorded, instead of a live show, and will feature a host of new guests, segments, and of course NEW art! More info will be dropping soon. I’m aiming for a Fall 2023 premiere.

But wait, there’s more! Throughout the month of May, you’ll be treated to a NEW live show experience that I call PLAY PARTNAS. Which is a double entendre, if you know…you know! You can actually see the first episode NOW on my YouTube Channel.

What IS Play Partnas? It’s a new live podcast where I sit down with amazing Black Gamer + Content Creators while we play the latest, greatest, and most favorite video games out there. So, similar to Da Art Bloc but more high energy and possibly a bit of yelling, haha! Episode 2 ft ZombaeKillz is happening THIS THURSDAY and we’ll be playing the zombie infested-indie darling, State of Decay 2. You won’t want to miss this!

EVEN MORE STUFF GOING ON!

The Habgoblins are here! I’ve been plotting to push them more into the spotlight and it’s fun getting into monster creation. I wonder if this is how Ken Sugimori felt when creating the first 150 Pokemon. This little dude here is FAKE BEBE aka THE IMPOBLIN. He was literally created during yesterday morning’s art stream and lowkey was a collab between myself and chat; specifically Cocoqueenie. She came up with the name and we created this whole backstory that it’s obviously not a real Habgoblin. We don’t know what the creature inside the suit is BUT it seems to always want to be included in Habgoblin activities. Guess we’ll just have to catch ‘em in the wild to learn more.

I’m also going to be taking time this month to revamp the Habtoons Patreon, as I absolutely want that to shine bright. If you are a Patreon, I’ve appreciated your support for all this time and I promise you, you will be VERY pleased with all I’ve got planned for this Patreon Revamp. Stay tuned!

There are a few other things going on BUT I don’t wanna jinx them just yet. It’s looking like its going to be a pretty decent 2023.

Stay gold
